Tether, the leading issuer of the USDT stablecoin in the cryptocurrency market, has recently announced leading a $25 million investment round into Oobit – a mobile crypto payment application based in Singapore – to support the project’s development and strengthen its goal of expanding the use of traditional cryptocurrency.

Joining Tether in the fundraising round were 468 Capital, the Titan Fund – a subsidiary of CMCC Global specializing in supporting blockchain startups in Asia – and finally, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko.

Oobit’s mobile payment app enables cryptocurrency owners to “Tap and Pay” at over 100 million retail locations worldwide accepting Visa or Mastercard. The integration between Oobit and Tether provides an additional payment solution for both sellers and buyers through digital assets.

Future updates to Oobit’s platform will facilitate seamless cryptocurrency payments for customers, while ensuring sellers receive fiat currency quickly, streamlining transactions from both ends. Additionally, Oobit plans to become a non-custodial crypto payment app executed by a third-party partner.

Oobit’s app is currently available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, pre-connected to Oobit’s blockchain wallet addresses to allow payments via USDT, Bitcoin, and several other digital assets.

Tether’s newly appointed CEO, Paolo Ardoino, shared:

“The strategic investment in Oobit demonstrates Tether’s strong commitment to welcoming new users into the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Furthermore, it reaffirms Tether’s vision to drive widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies on a global scale. Oobit acts as a catalyst to break down barriers and create favorable conditions for cryptocurrency holders worldwide to transact.”

According to its latest financial report, Tether is arguably the most profitable company in the cryptocurrency industry in 2023, with a total profit of $6.2 billion.

Regarding its stablecoin, as of December 31, 2023, Tether disclosed holding $97 billion in assets to back the $91.5 billion USDT issued to the market.

Of these assets, the largest portion is still held in US commercial paper with $80.3 billion (both directly and indirectly), along with other cash-equivalent assets. Additionally, the company owns $3.5 billion in gold bullion, $2.8 billion in Bitcoin, $3.7 billion in other investments, and $4.8 billion in assets for external lending.

The OBT token is the native utility coin of the Oobit ecosystem. OBT was created to serve platform activities such as supporting crypto payment gateways, incentivizing buying, selling, and other financial transactions using cryptocurrencies within the Oobit ecosystem.
